This project was one of my first projects a couple of years ago. Launa, a childhood friend, asked me to come by her townhome she recently purchased. She wanted to turn her space into “loft-like” loft. A “real” loft is considered to be a space built for industrial use and later converted into living space.

We were fortunate that Launa’s townhome had characteristics of a “real” loft with large windows and a wide-open living space. First, we chose Benjamin Moore’s Simply White for the entrance, stair well and the main living area. This change in hue brightened the area and was a great contrast for the dark wood floors and kitchen cabinets.

To turn the walls into an industrial space, Launa wanted to feature brick on an accent wall. After many hours of sourcing faux brick and brick pieces, neither of us was satisfied that the “loft” vibe would be represented. Finally, we decided to go for it and hired a brick layer for the project. The back side of the townhouse was featured with red brick with an extruded mortar joint.

We accessorized with vintage and newly acquired pieces along with a family heirloom wooden trunk that is a focal point of the room. I staged the room with yellow and camel accents which enhanced vintage blankets displayed on a wooden ladder in the corner of the dining area.

I am choosing the word “audacious” as one of Launa’s many characteristics. By using the real brick with extruded mortar joints, the project was a success. Our collaboration was a great accomplishment because Launa held true to the outcome she strived for.
